Cannon
One barrel, nine tiles of warning, and a very firm 'no' to your barbarians.
The Cannon is the most fundamental defensive structure in Clash of Clans, a sturdy round tower topped with a single heavy barrel that lobs explosive rounds at any ground-based attacker who strays too close. From the very first Town Hall a player erects, the Cannon stands as the backbone of their base, the first line of resistance against barbarians, archers, and every other foot-soldier that dares to cross the village boundary. Though it is outclassed in raw firepower by the Archer Tower, the Mortar, or the Inferno Tower, the Cannon's value lies in its simplicity, affordability, and reliability. It never misses, it never overheats, and it demands no special resources beyond gold to build or upgrade. For the vast majority of players, a well-placed ring of Cannons is the difference between a base that holds and one that crumbles in minutes.

Lore & Background
In the sprawling, perpetually skirmishing world of Clash of Clans, the Cannon is as old as the concept of a village wall. Blacksmiths in the outer settlements forge them from salvaged iron and packed gunpowder, and every new Town Hall that rises from the dirt comes with at least two Cannons bolted into the ground before the first wall segment is even laid. They are the village's immune system—unfancy, always present, and quietly lethal to anything that crawls or walks into their radius. Villagers have a fond, almost superstitious relationship with their Cannons. Children press their faces against the cold iron and watch the barrel swivel with wide eyes. Elders say that a Cannon that has never fired is a Cannon that has never truly been built. In trading posts and market squares, the clank of a fresh Cannon being delivered on a flatbed cart is greeted with the same quiet satisfaction as a good harvest. Despite their humble origins, Cannons have seen every major conflict the village has endured. They have held the line when the Archer Towers were still being designed, when the Mortar was nothing but a sketch on a war table, and when the Inferno Tower's prototype was still melting its own base. They do not need to be the strongest. They only need to be there, and they always are.
In Their Own Story
The dust had barely settled from the last raid when Old Maren wiped her hands on her apron and walked to the base of the Cannon. She pressed her palm flat against the cold iron of the barrel, feeling the faint vibration that meant the powder charge was still packed, still ready. Nine tiles. She'd measured it herself with a rope and a stick, back when the Town Hall was nothing but a stump and a flag. A young barbarian scout crested the eastern ridge, his little axe catching the late afternoon sun. Maren didn't flinch. She simply watched the Cannon's barrel track him with that slow, mechanical patience, the way a dog's eye follows a sparrow. The scout stopped. Looked back. Turned and ran. Maren smiled, patted the barrel, and went back to her bread. The Cannon would be there tomorrow, too. It always was.
Reader's Guide
The Cannon serves as your primary ground-defense layer. It locks onto any ground unit within its 9-tile range and fires a single explosive round per volley, dealing moderate damage that scales with level. It does not target air units, so always pair it with an Archer Tower or other air-defense to cover that gap. Unlocked at Town Hall 1, the Cannon is the first defense most players ever build. It reaches a maximum of level 10. Upgrades cost gold and take a short build time that grows with each level, but the investment is modest compared to heavier defenses, making it an easy early-game priority. Strategically, Cannons shine when clustered near your Town Hall or resource storages, forming a dense kill-zone that forces ground armies to commit troops piecemeal. Pair them with a Mortar for splash coverage and an Archer Tower for air, and you create a layered defense that punishes both ground and aerial pushes. Because Cannons are cheap to replace, they also make excellent sacrificial outer-ring defenses—sacrifice them to slow an army before the expensive core defenses even engage. Their greatest strength is not raw damage but the sheer number of shots they can deliver before being destroyed, making them the steady heartbeat of any well-built base.
Did You Know?
- The Cannon is one of only two defenses available from Town Hall 1, alongside the Archer Tower, making it the literal first wall of any village.
- Despite targeting only ground units, the Cannon's 9-tile range is one of the longest of any basic defense, giving it a surprisingly wide threat zone for its tier.
- Because Cannons are inexpensive to build and upgrade, many players use them as a 'sacrificial ring' around their core defenses to absorb early damage before expensive structures come under fire.
- The Cannon's single-barrel design is a deliberate contrast to the Archer Tower's twin-bow aesthetic, visually reinforcing its role as a heavy, slow, ground-focused weapon.
