Venom Spell
A slow, creeping poison that turns a base's strongest defenders into a ticking clock.
The Venom Spell is a ground-only area-of-effect spell in Clash of Clans that bathes a circular patch of the battlefield in a toxic, poison-cloud effect. Rather than dealing a single burst of damage, it applies a sustained damage-over-time (DoT) tick to every ground troop and ground defense inside its radius for the duration of the effect, effectively sapping their health and reducing their output over several seconds. It occupies a niche in the spell lineup that no other spell fills: a pure, non-explosive, non-stunning, non-freezing debuff that simply erodes. That makes it a favourite for softening a base's mid-layer defenses before a heavy push, or for shaving off the HP of stubborn troops that would otherwise survive a single hit-and-run.

Lore & Background
In the world of the Builder Village and the endless wars beyond its walls, the alchemists of the Village have long experimented with volatile compounds harvested from the fungal caverns that dot the landscape. The Venom Spell is one of their more refined creations: a concentrated extract of toxic spores bound into a throwable vial that, when shattered on the ground, releases a shimmering green cloud that lingers and devours. Unlike the explosive fury of the Lightning Spell or the freezing grip of the Freeze, the Venom is patient. It does not destroy; it corrodes. Veteran village elders speak of battles where an entire Army Camp's garrison simply melted away under a lingering cloud, their soldiers coughing and stumbling as their health bars bled out second by second. The spell's slow, inescapable nature makes it psychologically unsettling to defenders who watch their carefully placed troops slowly lose cohesion. The Venom Spell sits alongside the other high-level spells as a mark of a truly advanced village. Only those who have grown their Town Hall to its fifteenth iteration can craft and deploy it, and its presence in a war log is a quiet signal that the attacking clan has access to the full breadth of the spell arsenal.
In Their Own Story
The cloud rolled in low and slow, a sickly green haze that swallowed the Inferno Tower's base whole. Kael watched from the ridge as the tower's twin barrels stuttered, their orange glow dimming as the poison gnawed at its structural integrity. Below, a squadron of Balloons drifted lazily overhead, untouched by the venom—air was safe, ground was not. "Ten seconds," muttered Ryn, checking her wrist. The cloud pulsed once, twice. A goblin in the nearest Army Camp dropped to its knees, then crumpled. The tower's fire rate halved. Then the cloud thinned, the spores dissipating into the afternoon sun, leaving a faint green residue on the stone. Kael grinned. "Now the Lavaloon gets through."
She didn't need to say more. The Balloons banked, the Elixir Golems charged the gap, and the base's heart began to crack.
Reader's Guide
The Venom Spell is a ground-only poison that deals continuous damage-over-time to every ground troop and ground defense within its circular radius for its full duration. It does not affect air units, does not stun, does not freeze, and does not produce an explosion—its sole purpose is to steadily erode HP and, by extension, reduce the effective DPS of defenses like Inferno Towers, Mortars, and Army Camps while they sit inside the cloud. Unlocked at Town Hall 15, the spell is cast by tapping the spell icon and then tapping the desired ground location. The cloud appears instantly and persists for its set duration, ticking damage every second to all qualifying units in the radius. Drop-it-here tip for a 2H Lavaloon: Place the Venom directly on the mid-layer cluster of defenses (typically the Inferno Towers flanking the core) just before your Elixir Golems reach that zone. The sustained DoT will shave 15-25% off their HP and, more importantly, reduce their effective output during the critical window when Balloons are taking concentrated fire. This gives your Balloon cluster an extra few seconds of survivability that can be the difference between a 2-star and a 3-star. For a 5H Queen Charge, drop the Venom one or two tiles ahead of the Queen's expected path, centred on the ground troops or defenses she will plough through first. The poison weakens those units before she even arrives, meaning her single-target focus is spent on already-damaged targets, and she clears the path faster, reaching the core with more troops intact behind her. General rule: the Venom is a setup tool, not a kill tool. Use it to create a 2-3 second window of reduced threat, then commit your main damage into that window.
Did You Know?
- The Venom Spell is the only spell in Clash of Clans whose entire effect is a damage-over-time tick with no burst, stun, freeze, or knockback component—making it the most 'passive' spell in the game.
- Because it only affects ground units, it is completely useless against pure air compositions like a full Lavaloon without Golems, which is why it is most powerful in hybrid or ground-heavy attacks.
- The Venom's green-to-purple cloud visual was designed to visually distinguish it from the Freeze Spell's blue-white frost, even though both are 'non-explosive' area spells.
- In multi-clan war logs, a Venom Spell placed on an opponent's core defenses is often the first indicator that the attacking clan is running a high-TH15+ composition with access to the full spell suite.
