Laboratory
No army grows strong without the quiet hum of the Laboratory.
The Laboratory is a support building in Clash of Clans that serves as the sole gateway to improving your army's power. Without it, every troop, spell, and hero you train remains locked at its base level. Once unlocked, it becomes the quiet engine behind every offensive strategy, letting players push their warriors, mages, and support units to progressively higher tiers of damage, hit points, and utility. Though it sits among the defensive structures on your base, the Laboratory deals no damage and has no range. Its value is entirely logistical: the higher its level, the deeper the upgrade ceiling for your entire roster. Players who master the game understand that a well-leveled Lab can be just as decisive as a wall of Inferno Towers.

Lore & Background
In the scattered villages of the Clash of Clans world, the Laboratory stands as a modest stone-and-wood structure, its shelves lined with alchemical jars, rolled scrolls, and half-finished prototypes. It is here that the village's quartermasters and tinkerers spend long hours testing new poisons for Arrows, refining the enchantments that make a Wizard hit harder, or reinforcing the plating on a Golem's hide. The building itself is unassuming—no turret, no cannon, no glowing rune of destruction—but its output reshapes every raid that follows. Villagers speak of the Lab in hushed, practical terms. A level-1 Lab is a starting point, a rough workshop where a Barbarian gains a single notch of extra strength. But as the structure is reinforced, its shelves expanded, and its workbenches multiplied, the upgrades it permits become transformative. A level-9 Lab unlocks the pinnacle of troop and spell tiers, turning a once-mediocre army into a force capable of shattering even the most fortified bases on the map. Because the Laboratory generates no defensive fire, it is often tucked deep within a base's innermost ring, shielded by walls and surrounded by traps. Villagers consider it a treasure worth protecting at all costs; a rival's Builder or Royal Champion who reaches it and demolishes it can set an entire village's offensive progress back by weeks of gold and patience.
In Their Own Story
The torchlight flickered across the workbench as old Maren wiped soot from her goggles. Around her, the Laboratory hummed with the soft clink of glass vials and the distant thud of a hammer on an anvil. Three weeks. Three weeks of grinding gold, of watching the progress bar inch forward, and now—finally—the new enchantment was ready. She uncorked the vial. The liquid inside swirled a deep, arterial red, thicker than any Arrow she'd mixed before. She held it up to the flame. The glow pulsed like a slow heartbeat. "Level ten," she murmured, more to herself than to the young apprentice watching from the doorway. "That's the ceiling, kid. Past this, we're in uncharted territory."
Outside, the wind carried the distant crash of a wall being breached in some far-off village. Maren capped the vial, slotted it onto the shelf beside a dozen others, and turned back to her notes. The army was getting stronger. The question was whether the rest of the world would be ready for it.
Reader's Guide
The Laboratory is a pure utility building with no offensive or defensive combat stats. Its sole purpose is to raise the maximum upgrade level available to your troops, spells, and heroes. At its highest level (9), it permits upgrades up to tier 10, which is the absolute ceiling for any unit or spell in the game. Without a Laboratory, every soldier you train and every spell you brew stays at base level, making it the single most important building for offensive growth. It unlocks at Town Hall 4, placing it early in your progression. From there, each Town Hall tier raises the Lab's maximum level by roughly one step. Upgrade costs in gold scale significantly with level—early upgrades are modest, but pushing from level 7 to 8 or 8 to 9 demands a substantial gold reserve and a long build timer, often spanning several hours. Plan your gold income (Gold Mines, resource gathering) well in advance. Strategically, the Laboratory should be placed in the deepest, most protected pocket of your base. Since it deals no damage, it earns no defensive points, but losing it to a Builder, Royal Champion, or Hog Rider can cost you weeks of upgrade progress. Surround it with high-hitpoint walls, place it behind Inferno Towers or Eagle Artillery range, and consider a dedicated inner ring with traps (Swords, Bombs, or Log Snare) to punish attackers who commit to reaching it. Pair it with your Army Camp and spell storage in a tight cluster so that a single breach doesn't cascade into total loss. A common strategic note: prioritize Lab upgrades over additional defensive buildings during mid-game (TH6–TH9). The jump in troop damage and spell potency often yields more wins—and more loot—than an extra Cannon or Mortar, making the Lab a force multiplier for your entire economy loop.
Did You Know?
- The Laboratory is the only building in the game that enables troop and spell upgrades; without it, your entire army is permanently locked at level 1.
- Despite being listed under the 'Buildings & Defense' category, the Laboratory has zero damage, zero range, and no hit points contribution to your defensive score—its value is purely logistical.
- Because it generates no defensive fire, experienced base designers often sacrifice it as a 'bait' in the outer ring to draw in a Builder or Royal Champion before the rest of the base is exposed.
- The Lab's upgrade priority is one of the most debated topics in the community: some players rush it to unlock higher-tier troops faster, while others argue that defensive buildings yield more loot in the short term.
