Clash of Clans Codexery

Barbarian

One sword, one shield, zero patience — the Barbarian has been the face of the village since day one.

The Barbarian is the most iconic and accessible troop in the Clash of Clans universe. A burly, bearded swordsman clad in a red tunic and carrying a round shield, the Barbarian is the very first warrior a player can recruit from the Barracks the moment they settle in their village. As the foundational melee attacker, the Barbarian serves as the backbone of early-game raids and a reliable chaff unit in later strategies, swarming enemy defenses in waves of clashing steel and shouting fury. Though humble compared to the armored giants, flying dragons, or magical spellcasters that populate the later ranks of the army, the Barbarian's simplicity is its strength. They are cheap, fast to train, and endlessly available, making them the go-to choice for any player who needs to throw bodies at an opponent's defenses. Every Clash of Clans player, from the most casual to the most competitive, has built their first war on the shoulders of this trusty red-clad fighter.

Lore & Background

In the rough, mud-scarred world of Clash of Clans, the Barbarian is less a soldier than a way of life. They are the first fighters a new village chief calls to arms, drawn from the surrounding hills and forests by the promise of a hot meal and a good brawl. Their training is simple: swing the sword, block with the shield, and charge forward until the enemy stops. There is no fancy formation, no whispered tactical doctrine. Just a red tunic, a wild beard, and a grin that says the fight is the point. Over the years, the Barbarian has become a cultural touchstone of the entire game. They appear in tutorials, in the barracks queue, in the mind's eye of every player planning their first raid. The Barbarian King, their most famous descendant, carries a larger axe and a crown, yet his spirit is the same: charge in, hit hard, and never stop swinging. Even the Elite Barbarians, with their darker armor and heavier blades, are simply Barbarians who have seen enough battles to sharpen their edges. In the broader lore of the game, the Barbarian represents the heart of the village's military tradition. They are the common folk who pick up a sword when the village is threatened, the neighbors who form the first line of defense when a rival clan sends its warriors. They may not topple a Town Hall single-handedly, but in numbers, they are a tide of steel that no wall can hold forever.

In Their Own Story

The morning fog still clung to the thatched rooftops when the war horn sounded. Kael, a broad-shouldered man with a beard the color of rust, dropped his half-eaten turnip and reached for the sword behind the door. The shield was already on his back. He did not need to think. He did not need a plan. The horn meant one thing: someone was coming, and the village needed teeth. He ran through the muddy lane, past the bakery where old Maren was already pulling loaves from the oven, past the children who scattered like sparrows. At the gate, forty others were already shouldering their shields, their red tunics a single banner of defiance against the grey sky. The enemy riders crested the hill in a ragged line, spears catching the first pale sun. Kael grinned. He loved this part. He loved the weight of the sword, the ring of shield on shield, the way the ground shook when two hundred feet hit the dirt at once. He charged. The world narrowed to the next man, the next swing, the next breath. And when the dust settled and the enemy had turned and fled, Kael would be the first to sit down, pull a turnip from his belt, and say, "Same time tomorrow?"

Reader's Guide

Name: Barbarian | Unlock: Town Hall 1 (Barracks)

The Barbarian is the entry-level melee attacker, available from the very first Town Hall. At max level, their hitpoints climb into the low thousands, damage sits in the low-to-mid 40s range, and speed is a steady medium pace (1.2). They attack in melee range with a sword, targeting the nearest structure or troop in front of them. Their unique behavior is pure swarm: they have no special ability, no taunt, no summon — they simply walk forward and hit. In large numbers they overwhelm air defenses, distract tanks, and fill the attack queue cheaply. Best pairings: Pair Barbarians with the Barbarian King for a focused ground push, or use them as a sacrificial layer in front of Giants or Golems to absorb early damage. In clan war, a wall of Barbarians can pin down an enemy's archers or wizards long enough for your main troops to commit. They also work as a cheap "rage bait" in front of your real army. Drop them when: You need a cheap, fast, no-frills ground swarm to test defenses, clear low-level targets, or create a distraction while your heavy hitters do the real work. If the enemy is TH 1–4 and you have no better option, a full barracks of Barbarians is still a legitimate attack.
